Changing pre-requisities

    * the changeover from DNN 3.x to DNN 4.x - DNN 3.x used asp.net 1.1, whereas DNN 4.x and above require asp.net 2.0

    * editions prior to 4.6.2 - Prior to 4.6.2 site admins had to manually merge a number of key fields in web.config such as the machinekey and both connection strings. With 4.6.2 DotNetNuke introduced functionality known as xmlmerge which automatically does the web.config merging on your behalf.

    * DotNetNuke 5.2 - this version introduced the requirement for SQL 2005 and .net 3.5 SP1

Additional notes

    * All versions prior to 4.6.2 require manual merge of the web.config. From 4.6.2 on when an upgrade package is overlaid over an existing instance, DotNetNuke will automatically merge the necessary web.config changes.

    * 3.02.02 - 4.03.07 - please refer to the Detailed installation guide "Upgrade to DotNetNuke 4.x chapter" - http://www.dotnetnuke.com/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=gOZGbvrVKJw%3d&tabid=478&mid=857

To run a manual merge of your web.config you need to use a comparison tool. Winmerge is a good free opensource tool for this. A well regarded commerical tool is Beyond compare

"A business website today needs to cover the basics – it needs to be visually appealing, it needs to have an intuitive information architecture, it needs to provide dynamic, rich, compelling content, it needs to have mechanisms for visitor interaction, it needs to be optimized for speed and responsiveness, and it needs to deliver an excellent experience to traditional browser devices like desktops and laptops.

And to be noticed on the “Open Web”, a business website needs to be optimized for the major search engines. You need to ensure that Google, Yahoo!, and Bing are constantly indexing your latest content to ensure that your business information is immediately accessible and discoverable. In addition, you need be collecting detailed web analytics so that you understand the mechanics of your site and your visitors and then utilize this intelligence to drive greater exposure and revenues. "

It is a good idea to do some regular cleanning with your DNN / SQL server to keep the servers lean and mean!

  • Index the SQL database often
  • Defragment the HDD often
  • Turn off the logging by IIS
  • Deleted the IIS logs
  •

Use maintenance plans for SQL server and scheduled batch scripts for IIS log files and defragmentation of the HDD.

I used to think memory was the key factor that caused the dnn site performance issue. Lately I started to realize there are something else that have been giving me trouble - handles, threads can not go over certain number otherwise  the site won't behave well.

In order to find out a way to reduce the # of handles/threads, I came across this post which helped me a lot. The performance increase is dramatic.

After going through a lot of pain trying to enable the unique email I realized that I had to get rid of the duplicated email address from the past first. Here is what I did to get things done:

Preparation: before getting started I had several widows open:

the Admin "User Account" search window

the Host sql window

the database table window

Step 1: Find the duplicated emails and do the soft delete

Open the database table either from the server or using remote connection

There are several tables related to users:

UserProfile
UserRoles
users
aspnet_membership
aspnet_users

Just open one table to work with. I found "aspnet_membership" is the easiest one to work with since it sort the users by email address. Quickly scan the list and you can find the duplicated email addresses easily this way. Once you see a duplicated email, copy  and paste it into the already opened member search window and do a search by email. You will then get a list of users that using the same email account, keep one and delete the rest.

Repeat this process until you find all of them.

Step 2:  After the soft delete, you need the hard delete

The above soft delete does not really remove all the users with duplicated email account from the db. You need to do a hard delete. It's almost impossible to manually delete all of them since each single user account lives in multiple tables. There is a script from this site , run this script on your "Host" sql window. Note, each time it only delete 1 record, so you may just repeatedly run this script until you get rid of all of them from all the related tables. It is pretty easy to hit the run button even 100 times.

Step3: Enable the unique email

Go to web.config and find "requiresUniqueEmail="false", make the false into "true".

Note: unless it's a brand new site otherwise you need to ensure there is no duplicated email first before changing the web.config file.

This following is from dnn forum which summarizes the new dnn multiligual feature:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Content localization (CL) is one of the largest and most challenging projects with DNN core framework. It is even more ambitions, given the fact that all the architects and developers of DotNetNuke Corp. are native English speakers. One of their main goals was providing a solution, which is supporting the both, existing ML modules and the large number of single language modules for multilingual (ML) sites, as well as a solution for localization of site, page and module settings. The Internationalization team did provide some requirements and use cases, e.g. there are sites where each language is managed and edited separately (already covered by portals per language, either as individual domains for national subsidiaries, sub domains per country/language or child portals of a shared landing page), other sites, e.g. from many small and medium sized organizations in Europe, provide only parts of their content in foreign languages, while the bigger part of their content is addressing their national audience in their native language. A third use case covers international organizations and companies, which have to provide (nearly) all their content in multiple languages simultaneously. While the first use case is already covered, the page centric approach of DNN 5.5.0 focuses mainly on the second use case, to provide an option using all existing modules in a ML configuration. The third use case requires a “content” centric approach, using mainly multilingual modules providing localization of each text they include, e.g. each individual article in an announcements module.

Let’s review the current solution in respect to these goals:

  • Site settings got ML support by using existing base table and a new localization table, holding overloading translated texts and language specific values. This has been introduced in DNN 5.3, and seems to work now with no significant issues.
  • Pages get localized by providing single language copies of each page record with an extra key for language affected. All page settings are part of the page record and are now available per language – an advantage for language specific properties, which are available automatically, but a disadvantage for all other settings, which need to be synchronized (which currently seems not to function properly in all cases). Providing a number of uniquely expected settings redundantly in all language bears a risk of inconsistency.
  • Modules takes advantage of the existing concept of TabModules, i.e. modules being indirectly assigned to pages, which can be used for single language modules as well as ML modules, which now need an assigning record per language. The fact, that module title and other language specific properties have been moved from Modules to TabModules table provides full support of property localization.
  • Master language for all pages is taken from site settings and cannot be altered (neither for the site nor individual pages/branches of the site). IMHO this is a limiting fact, which needs to be reconsidered.
  • The implementation of page localization assigns a TabID per localized version, what makes each version easier to identify, but much more difficult to identify translated pages and switch between pages. The database does not reflect the hierarchy between master page and translated versions, i.e. integrity needs to be maintained in the BCL which bears some risks, e.g. if 3rd party solution access the data layer directly. I would have preferred using an approach like in site settings with a master page ID exposed and localized properties being overloaded, while an additional language key in TabModules filters the modules to display per page.
  • Synchronization of modules and tab settings has been implemented using a dedicated workflow, for authors and translators, which would be more appropriate for the third use case described before. It is requiring each page to be set up in master language first and requiring extra steps for translation support. This contrasts with the freedom of handling, used in other areas of DNN and needs to be redesigned. There are translation statistics, which are of limited use for the current approach and should be removed.
  • Any solution will need to deal with content language and UI language, which has not been distinguished in DNN before. As an example take an admin in the US, maintaining a site in English and Chinese (without speaking Chinese himself). When he gets Chinese texts from the translation agency for adding it to the site, he still needs to be able to read field and button captions. According to my ideas, the language selector Skin object should control UI and content language simultaneously for anonymous users and in view mode, while in editing mode the UI language sticks to the preferred language in his profile  - and eventually an additional language selector in the control panel might allow him to switch UI language as well, when needed (also required for authors of language pack to validate their translations).

As a conclusion, I consider CL in DNN 5.5 as a big step into the right direction, but a lot of work needs to be done – and eventually some basic decisions being reconsidered.

by Sebastian Leupold   More here

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Thanks to Sebastian for outlining some of the detail. One of the most powerful reasons behind going for a page rather than module model was that a model module requires all modules to work in that fashion. Considering the number of modules that are in use but do not have source, or are not being actively developed or who's developers would not ever upgrade them to work in a module localization fashion (i.e. the original module was free or did not have enough sales to justify more work), going a module localization route was dangerous. Ironically it's easier to code, but we choose to take the approach that did not contain that risk, and take on the more challenging code of a page approach.

2. Sacha was asking about the difference from "clone" modules. The changes we made for localization add support to track the translation status of content e.g. if i add some en-us content, add a language (e.g. de-de) and localize the site the existing modules are effectively cloned (using the existing tabmodules support). However some additional values are written so that the relationship with the original content is maintained. This is important, as it allows us to see that the new content (de-de) is not translated. To translate the content the user detaches the module, this means that the 2 instances no longer share the same piece of content, instead it's copied to the new one. The user can the translate it and mark it as translated. Despite the fact that the tabmodules relationship is gone (due to the detach) the values allow us to track the relatioship and translation status. Finally, creating the module instances in this fashion allows us to add additional fuctionality e.g. we create language specific translator roles and apply those permissions as part of the process.

As to the other points, we're currently debating a couple of key pieces, the Language Selector Skin Object Behavior and Human Friendly Urls behaviours, both within the corp and with the internationalization team. Depending on the decision made we may alter the functionality, or even revert back to previous functionality (though the call to revert some back has met with as much reluctance as leaving it in place, so we may enhace areas to support multple use-cases i.e. adding a setting to control. Adding new settings is never ideal, as it complicates things and has more learning involved, but for this area it may be the right/only (delete as approriate :) ) choice)

Google apps email is free, fast and offers a lot of cool features. It also allows more smtp relays. Here are the steps of setting up a google apps email account and using google's smtp server for your dnn site. The standard account is free with up to 50 email accounts.

1. Go to: http://www.google.com/a/cpanel/domain/new

2. Enter your domain and follow the steps

3. Verify your account

4. Under Dashboard page, go to the Email -> Click "Activate email"

5. Change MX records

6. Click "I have completed these steps". You will be redirected to the Dashboard page. You will see "Updating... We are checking MX records for your domain. This may take 48 hours to complete." In fact it often only takes a few minutes.

7. Once the email is active, click the email account you have, under settings, go to "Forwarding and POP/IMAP, by default, pop is enabled, you need to enable "IMAP".

8. To set up the email client, use the following info ( or refer to google's page to use IMAP instead of POP3):

POP3: pop.gmail.com
SMTP: smpt.gmail.com

SMTP PORT: 465
POP3 PORT: 995

HTML5 is the next major revision of HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), the core markup language of the World Wide Web. The Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group (WHATWG) started work on the specification in June 2004 under the name Web Applications 1.0. As of October 2009, the specification is in the "Last Call" state at the WHATWG.

HTML5 is the proposed next standard for HTML 4.01, XHTML 1.0 and DOM Level 2 HTML.

HTML5 aims to reduce the need for proprietary plug-in-based rich Internet application (RIA) technologies such as Adobe Flash, Microsoft Silverlight, and Sun JavaFX.

The ideas behind HTML5 were pioneered in 2004 by the WHATWG; HTML5 incorporates Web Forms 2.0, another WHATWG specification. The HTML5 specification was adopted as the starting point of the work of the new HTML working group of the W3C in 2007. This working group published the First Public Working Draft of the specification on January 22, 2008. The specification is an ongoing work, and is expected to remain so for many years, although parts of HTML5 are going to be finished and implemented in browsers before the whole specification reaches final Recommendation status. The editors are Ian Hickson of Google, Inc. and David Hyatt of Apple, Inc.

Markup

HTML5 introduces a number of new elements and attributes that reflect typical usage on modern Web sites. Some of them are semantic replacements for common uses of generic block (<div>) and inline (<span>) elements, for example <nav> (website navigation block) and <footer>. Other elements provide new functionality through a standardized interface, such as the <audio> and <video> elements.

Some deprecated elements from HTML 4.01 have been dropped, including purely presentational elements such as <font> and <center>, whose effects are achieved using CSS. There is also a renewed emphasis on the importance of DOM scripting in Web behavior.

The HTML5 syntax is no longer based on SGML despite the similarity of its markup. It has, however, been designed to be backward compatible with common parsing of older versions of HTML. It comes with a new introductory line that looks like an SGML document type declaration, <!DOCTYPE html>, which enables standards-compliant rendering in all browsers that use "DOCTYPE sniffing".

New APIs

In addition to specifying markup, HTML5 specifies scripting application programming interfaces (APIs).[6] Existing document object model (DOM) interfaces are extended and de facto features documented. There are also new APIs, such as:

    * The canvas element for immediate mode 2D drawing
    * Timed media playback
    * Offline storage database
    * Document editing
    * Drag-and-drop
    * Cross-document messaging
    * Browser history management
    * MIME type and protocol handler registration

Some of the new features are part of HTML5 mainly because there are no volunteers to split HTML5 and maintain separate specifications of these features.

Differences from HTML 4.01/XHTML 1.x

The following is a cursory list of differences and some specific examples.

    * New parsing rules oriented towards flexible parsing and compatibility; not based on SGML
    * Ability to use inline SVG and MathML in text/html
    * New elements – section, article, footer, audio, video, progress, nav, meter, time, aside, canvas, hgroup
    * New types of form controls – dates and times, email, url, search
    * New attributes – ping (on a and area), charset (on meta), async (on script)
    * Global attributes (that can be applied for every element) – id, tabindex, hidden, data-* (custom data attributes)
    * Forms will get support for PUT and DELETE methods too instead of just GET and POST (see Representational State Transfer for use cases)
    * Deprecated elements dropped – center, font, strike, frameset

Completion

Ian Hickson, editor of the HTML5 specification, expects the specification to reach the W3C Candidate Recommendation stage during 2012, and W3C Recommendation in the year 2022 or later. However, many parts of the specification are stable and may be implemented in products. According to the W3C timetable, it is estimated that HTML5 will reach W3C Recommendation by late 2010. However, the First Public Working Draft estimate was missed with 8 months, and Last Call and Candidate Recommendation were expected to be reached in 2008 but as of late 2009 HTML5 had not reached W3C Last Call.

An ad server is a computer server, specifically a web server, that stores advertisements used in online marketing and delivers them to website visitors.

Ad servers come in two types: local ad servers and third-party or remote ad servers.

Free Ad Servers:

Open X - OpenX is a piece of free software that allows medium and large website to control their inventory.

Google Ad Manager - Google Ad manager is built specifically for small publishers. You can only use this ad server for small sites, because it is not compatible with any larger ad servers, and you have to put ad code straight into the header of your site.

Corporate Ad Servers:

Zedo - Zedo is great but they were very expensive compared to all the other companies. This might due to the great customer service and the results they can bring your sites.

DoubleClick - Instead of Trafficking, reporting, billing and account details all in one sections, they seem to have segmented them. They are the worlds best ad serving tool and the most used.

Atlas - From Microsoft. They don't seem to offer good customer service.

Holography (from the Greek, ὅλος-hólos whole + γραφή-grafē writing, drawing) is a technique that allows the light scattered from an object to be recorded and later reconstructed so that it appears as if the object is in the same position relative to the recording medium as it was when recorded. The image changes as the position and orientation of the viewing system changes in exactly the same way as if the object was still present, thus making the recorded image (hologram) appear three dimensional. Holograms can also be made using other types of waves.

Google AdSense is the current leader in content-sensitive web-based marketing. Webmasters can place Google AdSense JavaScript code on their web pages in order to allow Google's servers to show context sensitive advertisements (Google Adwords). The left hand side of this page shows an example of a Google AdSense skyscraper displaying a text or image ad.

Google's terms and conditions are very strict such that many web publishers cannot use adsense adverts on their sites. They are either denied from joining the Google AdSense program, or in a situation that is becoming more and more common do not wish to do business with Google. A number of publishers are also finding their Adsense accounts are being disabled for reasons that are completely beyond their control. The problem is that most of the alternatives to Google's Adsense are pretty useless. Most of the good ones (such as doubleclick) are only interested in very large volume customers and so are not interested in the little guy with his blog who wants to earn a small income on the side. For this reason I have compiled my Top 10 alternatives to Google's Adsense that are ideal for the small time publisher.

Has your adsense account been disabled? Then try these top 10 alternatives.

1. Clicksor
2. Yahoo Publisher Network
3. All Feeds
4. Fast Click
5. Veoda
6. Bidvertiser
7. Chitika
8. Target Point
9. Revenue Pilot
10. ClickThruTraffic

Note: The descriptions are based on personal experience and do represent any form of endorsement.

1) Clicksor

Clicksor is easily the current leader of the small publisher Adsense competition. They have payouts upto a market leading 85% and unlike a number of alternatives the cost per click bid values are high enough that you can earn a decent income. They are also, in my experience, much more tollerant than Google. Their terms and conditions suggest that you should only place one copy of their code on a page but as long as you only place a single pop-up or DHTML code on a page they seem happy to let you place many context sensitive ad blocks on a single site.

Clicksor also has a big advantage over a number of the lower ranked alternatives on this site in that their ads are truly context sensitive. Thus while you can provide keywords they have technology that will also show ads targeted to the content of your site. This means your visitors are exposed to ads of the same subject as they were searching for when they reached your site and thus vastly increases the click thru ratio and thus your sites earning potential. The context sensitive nature also saves you the hassle of having to specify keywords for all of your sites and decide in advance what people might be looking for.

The online stats provided by Clicksor are not perfect but they are enough for you to keep track of the trends with your site. They also allow you to add as many sites / domains as you want under a single account. You also only need the root page of your site approved. Once this is done you can place ads on all of your sub pages.

The payment schedule with Clicksor is also much better geared to the small site owner. In any pay period in which your earnings exceed $50.00 ($20.00 with PayPal), payments are made either by check or instantly through PayPal ($20.00 minimum for PayPal). Revenue totaling less that $50 (PP $20) will rolled into the following period. The pay period is based on a 15 day schedule so you can get paid much more frequently. Clicksor also do not require a Social Security (SSN) or Individual Tax Identity Number (ITIN) to join and so while this 'technically' does not help US site owners with their tax liability it does make it much easier for non US citizens to join up and start earning revenue.

Advert wise Clicksor features:

Multiple formats available including text, image and animated ads.

* Text Links
* Image Ads
* Flash Ads
* Animation Ads
* Banners
* Pop unders
* Dynamic (DHTML) highlighting

Click here to visit Clicksor's website and sign up for an account to try it out. There is no obligation and no fees ever. Note, once you start adding the advert code to your site it can take up to 24 hours for Clicksor to get up to speed as it were so initially you may see some ads that don't appear to be relevant. Once their contextual engine kicks in, however, the relevance quickly improves.

2) Yahoo Publisher Network

Yahoo are currently playing catch up to Google and are trying to release their own context sensitive advertising service. This promises to be an excellent alternative to Google Adsense but in reality is likely to be a simple copy with the same restrictive terms and conditions as Google, including $100 minimums on payouts. At present the system is still in beta test and while you can visit their site and sign up to register your interest it appears at present that they are not accepting new advertisers. In fact most applicants won't even receive a reply. Thus until it goes live and it becomes clear what type of website owners Yahoo will be targetting I can only place it in second place.

Advert wise Yahoo Publisher Network will feature:

* Display ads related to the content on your site. You'll earn revenue from qualified clicks.
* Integrate other Yahoo! services into your web site, including Add to My Yahoo! (RSS), Y!Q and much more to come...
* This beta program is just the beginning. Our mission is to deliver products and services based on the needs of the publishing community.

3) AllFeeds

Allfeeds is another alternative to Google Adsense particularly targetted to smaller publishers. They offer a huge selection of advertsing options including:

* Text Links
* Search Boxes
* DHTML Popups
* Buttons
* Banners
* XML Feeds

The payouts are not as good as Clicksor and Yahoo but if you have relevant keywords can be fairly good. The only real problem is that you have to get each individual page approved and provide a set of keywords for each page. This can be real time consuming and makes it difficult to accurately target your website's audience.

A good advantage of AllFeeds though, and the reason I have given it 3rd place is that their minimums for payout are small. Once you have earned just $25.00 they will send you a check. Alternatively if you use PayPal they will pay you everytime you reach just $10.00 in earnings. If you don't earn enough for payout in a given month then your earnings will simply be rolled over to the next month. It is free to join, there is no obligation, you can cancel at anytime and there are never any fees.

Click here to visit allfeeds' website and sign up for an account to try it out. There is no obligation and no fees ever.

4) FastClick

At first look FastClick would appear to be one of the better alternatives to Google's Adsense however, they are one of many online advertising companies that tend to favor the large customers. You'd think companies would have learnt from Google's success and accepted that the way to make money is to target both large and small. Remember Excite? They went the way of the dodo because they only targeted the top 100 companies rather than the small guys who can't afford large TV adverts and have to advertise on the Internet instead. Anyway, I digress. If you can get yourself accepted to FastClick (now called ValueClick) then you will probably be able to run some reasonably high paying adverts on your site but most small website owners will find that FastClick simply aren't interested.

Advertising wise FastClick (ValueClick) off an industry-average 65-percent monthly payout on all advertising revenue your website generates. Fastclick pays by the 25th of the month for the previous month by check or PayPal.

Formats include:

* Text Ads
* Image Ads
* Interstitial
* Pop-Under
* InVue

5) Veoda

Veoda can be a useful alternative for small website owners since they don't require any minimum page views per month. They pay 60% of the revenues generated per click to you and upto 90% if your site has a high traffic rate. They payout at only $25.00 and unlike Google and Yahoo do not require any tax information making it ideal for small website owners who don't want to have to deal with registering their website as a small business. Something they would have to do if they earnt money through Google or Yahoo where social security numbers are required. The range of advertizers is sadly lacking but Veoda does have an intriguing range of different advert format options including:

* Static Listings
* Context Sensitive Ads
* Text and Graphical Ads
* Flash Ads
* Animated Scrolling Ads
* Flash Listings professional animated scrolling ads
* Search boxes
* Fly in Ads
* Xml Feeds Data feed for external parsing

Click here to sign up for Veoda and try it out on your site today. There is no obligation, it is completely free and you can cancel at any time.

6) Bidvertiser

Bidvertiser can be a useful alternative to Google and offer some intriguing ad formats including what they refer to as free design. This lets you specify the look and dimensions of your text ads. While a useful feature I have not investigated how well it works but imagine that while it sounds good on paper it could result in lower priced ads being displayed. I.e. most advertisers will probably want to keep control of the layout of their ads and so turn off support for Free design ads.

Bidvertizer pays you either in $50.00 increments by check or $10.00 increments by PayPal.

Customize the layout of your ads: BidVertiser gives you a simple point-and-click tool to help you customize the layout of the ads to fit your site's look and feel, in order to retain the high quality of your website. Bidvertizer also offers the opportunity to block unwanted ads. The reports provided by Bidvertiser are adequate but not outstanding. The only real problem is that they can be picky with who they accept into their program and can be quick to ban users whose websites show what may be perfectly valid fluctuating visitor behaviour.

7) Chitika

Chitika takes a different approach to internet advertizing. Instead of displaying the 'industry standard' advert boxes with text and image ads that all look the same they instead provide active boxes that show targeted products from different manufacturers. If you run a blog for example and discuss a product you may find the chitika box showing links for this product and competitors products. If people purchase these products you get a paid a commission. This is refered to as impulse marketing in the form of eMinimalls. Feel free to give it a try although I think the ideal use of this service would be as a compliment to another advertizers service. E.g. you could show Clicksor context sensitive ads on your site and then compliment these with Chitika's eMinimalls.

8) TargetPoint

Targetpoints services are particularly publisher-oriented, you have absolute control over the appearance of your ads. They provide supervision over ad content. The payouts tend to be reasonable but they can be quite choosey regarding which sites are accepted.

Advert wise Target Point provide:

* Adpoint generates content-relevant, revenue-evaluated ads.
* Exitpoint helps utilizing the full capacity web exit traffic.
* Imagepoint serves visual ads. Known to the rest of the world as Image ads.
* Underpoint serves pop-under ad windows.
* Searchpoint (beta) features enhanced search capabilities, which enhance your users experience and generate additional profit.

Registration is free and they pay back a minimum of 60% of the total on-click revenue. Payment options include Bank checks, PayPal and Wire transfers (if eligible).

9) Revenue Pilot

RevenuePilot would appear to be a very good ad server alternative although I would be careful to take most of their claims at face value. They claim to offer the Industry's highest bid prices and largest payouts with CPC of $2.00 or more. I find these claims very hard to believe. Indeed why would an advertiser be interested in advertising with a client that essentially claims to be ripping them off. Either way the claims may be true in which case this could be a very lucrative advertising system for your website. Feel free to try it and make up your own mind.

10) ClickThruTraffic

Not the best alternative but if you can't get accepted by any of the above you can always try these guys. They claim that you will earn between 6 and 20 cents everytime a surfer clicks on an advertisement on your site but in reality I think you are more likely to see rates around the 0.5c to 2c range. However, feel free to try it out and see how you get on. Advert wise they offer text links, buttons and banners.

The easiest way to get rid of the sitelog is to turn it of in the Host settings and then run from the Host Menu -> SQL:

(1) truncate table Eventlog
(2) truncate table SiteLog
(3) truncate table ScheduleHistory
(4) truncate table SearchItemWordPosition

...anything that is NOT protected under US copyright law. This includes ALL works published before 1923 AND, under certain conditions, works published up to 1978. A 'work' can be anything: a book, a play, music, photographs, movies, instruction manuals, courses, reports, posters, etc... Re-publishing and re-packaging public domain information and other creative works can make you a lot of money. The reason is fairly simple: If you find, re-package and sell information that has fallen into the public domain you do not have to pay royalties or copyright fees on that work. Can you tell me about any other business that...

i think i did what you want on my private site:   www.wolfsbau.de
See the latest news module on the home page.

Here's what i did:
In the view settings of the latest news module, i applied a css class "HomepageNewsFeatured" to the parent element, containing  the news teaser and the image. In my case this is a table cell tag.

Then i defined the css-properties of the img tag within this td-tag in the Portal stylesheet:

td.HomepageNewsFeatured img {
float: left;
margin-right: 10px;
margin-bottom: 10px;
}

Since you can not use forms in DotNetNuke, a good way of achieving this is to use iFrame where you can place a html module in.

# Solution1:

by calabresi from this post.

Create a .txt file with the code you get in adsense or Co-op, Im using Co-op and I ask to go results in search results page of my site, so...

.TXT file start:

<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%">
    <tr>
        <td>
<!-- Google CSE Search Box Begins -->
  <form id="searchbox_003708503336895402913:pcj68nrrmcq" action="
http://www.visflux.dyndns.org/SearchResults/tabid/37/Default.aspx/">
    <input type="hidden" name="cx" value="003708503336895402913:pcj68nrrmcq" />
    <input type="hidden" name="cof" value="FORID:11" />
    <input name="q" type="text" size="30" />
    <input type="submit" name="sa" value="Search" />
  </form>
  <script type="text/javascript" src="
http://www.google.com/coop/cse/brand?form=searchbox_003708503336895402913%3Apcj68nrrmcq"></script>
<!-- Google CSE Search Box Ends -->
</td>
    </tr>
</table>

Then, create your iFrame module and go edit iFrame, the source is file, upload it and set it, adjust width heigth (mine is 240,65), no scroll, no border, and there you go, you can check on my site if you like.

#Solution 2:

From this post.

Use iFrame and put the following code into html module:

<form method="get" action="http://www.google.it/custom" target="google_window">
<table border="0" bgcolor="#ffffff">
<tr><td nowrap="nowrap" valign="top" align="left" height="32">

<input type="hidden" name="domains" value="www.gruppovoloolbia.it"></input>
<input type="text" name="q" size="31" maxlength="255" value=""></input>
<input type="submit" name="sa" value="Cerca"></input>
</td></tr>
<tr>
<td nowrap="nowrap">
<table>
<tr>
<td>

</tr>
</table>
<input type="hidden" name="client" value="pub-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX"></input>

Besides all the things ( for example: SEO) we know here are some other tricks of promoting your website:

Use Your Checks
List your company url on both, your business and personal
checks. It doesn't cost any more and you just don't know who will
see your check and take an interest!

Car Window Decal
 You don't have to order these in large quantities anymore! This
site has a variety to choose from, good prices and you can order as
many as you want, including one! People do take notice of these!

All Company Material
Letterhead, business cards, envelopes, newsletters, advertisements, notes, brochures... anything that you send out through  your business, make sure to have your company's url listed somewhere on it!

All Personal Material
You know all those nasty bills you send out every month? All  the
letters to relatives, friends, etc.? Include your url in the return address!

Answering Machine
Don¹t forget this! It doesn¹t take all that long to incorporate your
url in your outgoing message... " Don't forget to visit us on the Internet at www.dnnskin.com "(for example)

Yellow Pages
For just a little more than your bill is now, most yellow pages will list your
url right along side your business listing.

Wearables
Use your logo or have a design created especially for this project.
Most discount department stores and business suppliers will have a variety of transfer papers available so you can make your own wearable advertisements
with a computer, inkjet printer and an iron. If you're not skilled in design,
have the design work professionally done and you do the ironing on.

Not-for-Profit Contributions
A lot of times if you contribute to a not-for-profit organization, either personally or through your company, the organization will list your name in some sort of material - maybe their newsletter, brochure, or special event flyer - ask that your url be listed as well as your telephone number.

Create a College Scholarship
Do you know just how little this can take? Call some area colleges and find out about this! You can create a scholarship for a student for as little as $100.00 in some places!! Your name will go out to thousands of people all year long in information
packages... great advertising at low cost!

Targeted Newsletter Ads
If you know of a newsletter that has the same target audience as
your market, take out an ad. Make sure to offer a special incentive to respond so you¹ll be able to track the response rate.

Candy Promotion
An office or storefront counter promotion... just get some bags of those little candy bars and create wrappers for them that have a special incentive reason to visit your website. If your not handy with the design work to set up a wrapper, this can be done by most graphic designers.

Portfolio of Your Web Designer
Does your designer's portfolio include your projects? If not, ask them to please use the items they have designed for you in it! Think of all the people who will see it!

Goodie Bag
Do you keep in contact with your local Chamber of Commerce?  If
you don't, you should! Did you know that many times when conventions
come to town, Chamber members can donate items (including coupons) to
place into goodie bags for city visitors? Or how about making your own? You can easily stuff a few treats into a candy bag and staple on a topper distributing these to your target market... candies to youth groups, pens and other small office supplies to businesses... use your imagination with these! They can be great fun to do!!

Chamber of Commerce
If your business is not involved in Chamber activities, you¹re missing out. Along with being listed in their directory, for a nominal fee, most Chambers will allow members to include a flyer within the information they send out to those who request it or as an insert in their newsletter.

Web Card Mailing
Send out a promotional postcard featuring your website! Make sure to choose a target audience and include a special incentive for responding to this mailing. Web cards are a wonderful way to let prospects know about your website and invite them to visit it.

Sponsor Contests
On or off line, if your company sponsors a contest, more than likely the contest coordinator will include your url in the contact/sponsors listing.

Tips Sheets
Offer free tip sheets that you can hand out, distribute over the Internet, have published in the paper or a newsletter on a subject you are knowledgeable in. If the publication is not yours, ask for your company's url to be listed in the byline.

E-Mail Signature Line
It's there, free for the using - so do it! Here's an example:

        MAJiC Graphix
          Stationary & notecards personalized by You!

Even if it's only fun email to a friend, always use your signature line!
If that funny joke or witty saying is passed along, so is your url!

E-Mail Signature Line - Swap Them
Have your friends and family list your url in their signature lines.
Also, find a business that compliments yours and ask to swap lines with them ---
you list their url in your signature line, and in return, they list your url within theirs.

Website Link Exchanges
Don¹t be too shy about your site! If you see another site out there that you feel comfortable promoting on your site, write to the owner/s and ask to exchange links with them! Keep the note short and simple, stating why you think this would be mutually benefiting to both sites. Make these notes personal though - no mass producing and blindly sending to any and all sites you go to... better known as
the O'dreaded  spam... make sure you're asking because you think their company site and your company site really do compliment the other in some way.

Internet Message Boards
Visit them and post regularly. Not ads for your business though!
Ads not only violate some site policies, a lot of people will not pay any attention to them due to the high rate of Internet scams  out there. Say something meaningful though, contributing to the thread of conversation, show your knowledge, and sign with your name and url.

Write for E-Zines or Websites
Though most of these do not have budgeted to actually pay for their writers, most will include a short bio of your business along  with your company's url after your article.

Join
Google and Yahoo groups

If you can find ones on the same topic and you join the groups you have a resource. A lot of the people on these groups have their settings to recieve email from the groups. Sometimes there are thousands of people on these groups that will get an email if something is posted to the group forum.

Posting on Craigslist and Us Free Ads.

Both can drive some traffic if you write the ad correctly. Craigslist is good becuase you can target multiple cities. Make sure you target the right category or your ad will be deleted. You need to be able to fly under the radar.

Get your story on reddit.com or netscape.com.

When DotNetNuke released version 4.5, we decided that the next version of Active Forums would only support DotNetNuke 4.5 and higher. Why? Because it's the best release we have seen yet and offers some of the latest technology functions that we can leverage in our products. If you haven't upgraded yet, why not?

What I find really amazing is that we have had a handful of new customers purchase Active Forums 3.7 only to find out that they are stuck on an older version of DotNetNuke. DotNetNuke 3.x hasn't seen a release since 11/30/2006 and that was marked as the final release for ASP.NET 1.1.

Let's look at some reasons you could be stuck on an older version and how to avoid them.

Good keywords are frequently searched for (high demand) but not being targeted by many other websites (low competition). There are a number of tools out there that can help you find them.

Wordtracker

The best tool out there, Wordtracker is one of the most essential SEO tools. To use Wordtracker:

  • Go to the Wordtracker website and pay £7 for 24 hours’ access
  • Enter a keyword phrase you're thinking about targeting
  • Wordtracker will suggest hundreds of related phrases - click on the ones you like
  • Once you've clicked on all the phrases you like, run them through the program
  • Wordtracker will compile a score for each phrase, based on the number of users searching for it and the number of websites targeting it
  • The higher the score, the better the keyword phrase!

Wordtracker also offers a free service which works in the same way but only uses results generated from Altavista.

Other tools

Overture

Also useful, Overture's search term suggestion tool, is free and much quicker to use than Wordtracker. It works in much the same way as Wordtracker but doesn't tell you how many websites are targeting each keyword phrase.

Google

Google AdWords Keyword Suggestions tell you which keyword phrases are being targeted by other websites.

Guidebeam

Guidebeam is an interesting resource. Type in a phrase and it will suggest a large number of related searches. The numbers provided for each phrase are Guidebeam's estimation of how relevant that phrase is.

A permalink is a URL that points to a specific blogging entry even after the entry has passed from the front page into the blog archives. Because a permalink remains unchanged indefinitely, its use avoids link rot. Most modern weblogging and content-syndication software systems, including Wordpress, Movable Type, LiveJournal, RapidWeaver, Pivot and Blogger, support such links. Other types of websites use permalinks, too, but the term itself is most common within the blogosphere. Permalink is a portmanteau word made from permanent link and is often simply stated so as to be human-readable.

1. Admin -> Skins then select "Restore Default Skin"

2. If you know your way around SQL you could use the SQL box in the host menu. The skin setting is in the table Tabs, you need to nullify the column SkinSrc for all the pages in the portal you wish to reset.

There is an easy way to clear all of these assignments IF you have database access. You can run the following query:-

UPDATE dnn_Tabs SET SkinSrc = null (WHERE PortalID = [PortalID)*

* Notes
  • Optional clause to be used to only apply on a specific portal.
  • Watch for the objectQualifier, the default is dnn_
The same concept can be applied to contains and the ContainerSrc column of dnn_Tabs.

Using SSL encryption to secure information is server and client processor intensive, not to mention that the process can significantly slow the presentation of pages to your visitors. Not surprisingly, some webmasters have instituted an underhanded method to avoid the entire problem by placing sensitive information such as login/password inputs on home pages that are not SSL encrypted. The general programming concept seems to be that since the login/password information is being submitted to a HTTPS encrypted page, the data secure.  Well not so fast.

Steps I took for upgrading ( using webhost4life):

1. Make a back up of db;

2. Make a copy of the entire website folder and upload the upload the DotNetNuke_4.4.1_Upgrade files by doing the followings:

   a) Create a new root folder on webhost4life;

   b) Zip the current working web folder (the folder which has the entire dnn installation);

   c) Unzip the zipped folder into the newly created root folder;

   d) Upload the dnn 4.4.1 upgrade files ("DotNetNuke_4.4.1_Upgrade", unzipped) to the server's newly created folder.

3. Point the site directory to the newly created folder.

That's it. This way you don't need to change any keys or anything on web.config file. And if there is anything goes wrong, you can change the path to the old folder immediately.

Note:

Remove all the unnecessary modules before the process. Make sure module versions would work with the new dnn installation.

Both of these posts miss the original point that Joel was trying to make:  Ruby is still not a mature language, and Ruby on Rails is even less mature.  There is no evidence yet that Ruby or Ruby on Rails applications will scale to the level typically required for many large scale web applications.  There are well documented performance issues, that Joel rightly points out.

The following is from a post from Webmaster World. I think it's a great article and a good read for anyone starting up a website.

I know this system works 100% of the time with Google to attain rankings across a wide range of keywords. This is what I do with clients to build a successful site and it has worked every time. The level of success will depend largely on the subject matter, its potential audience, and its level of competition on the net.

They are coded as buttons:
<asp:button id="cmdLogin" resourcekey="cmdLogin" cssclass="StandardButton" text="Login" runat="server" width="100%" />

BUT you can style them to almost look like text links by setting the StandardButton class in your skin.css file:
.StandardButton {
background: #ffffff none;
border: 0px;
color: black;
text-decoration: underline;
font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
font-size: 11px;
font-weight: normal;
}
Adjust the colors, font, etc. to match your skin.  I wasn't able to set a different style for hover, etc...

Q:

Sure there is a LIST data type but how do I customize that list.  If I enter a new list in the LIST tool that does not appear in the available data  types of the USER tool.

A:

The List data type works with the Host "Lists" module.

To use a List, select the List data type, and remember the name you use for the List based property.

Go to the Host Lists page and create a list with the same name you used above.  Then add List Entries to the List in the Host Lists module.  The value will be stored in the database for the profile while the "text" will be used as the text in the drop-down list.

As many of you know, the next major release of DotNetNuke ( 4.4.0 ) is focused entirely on performance and scalability improvements. However, in order to accurately identify the areas of DotNetNuke which needed to be tuned or optimized, it was first necessary to have a solid understanding of how IIS and ASP.NET operate in Windows hosting environment. In our research we found surprisingly few resources on this subject; especially resources which presented the information in a clear and concise manner. Therefore we thought it would be useful to improve the knowledge base in this area and share our findings with the community.

  • Calendar view is the only view that appears (to best of my knowledge) to allow you to enter new events.  If you want to display events on your site you will need to have at least on event module in calendar view so you can add events.  As I'll describe later, this calendar view of the event module need not be visible to anyone but administrator.
  • List view is a view-only mode for am event module, so you can't add new events directly in this view.  You configure it to reference the calendar (this is the fifth one) and call it something like "Our Family Calendar".  In the Master section of the settings for "Our Family Calendar" check the box to indicate this a Master Event Module.  From the drop down list labeled Add Event Module to Master: select each of the 4 family member calendars and click the Add link.  This will add them as sub-event modules to this master calendar.  You can now see events from all of the four family events calendars on this one "Our Family Calendar".  So it aggregates all of the other calendars into one convenient single view.  As you add to each of the sub-event calendars it will be reflected automatically on the master calendar.

The business of search engine optimization is infested with sharks: scammers, swindlers, spammers and fraud artists. They are the Bad Guys of the Internet, and so like the Bad Guys in the old cowboy movies, we say they wear Black Hats. You could tell the good guys in the cowboy movies because they wore White Hats.

The practice of White Hat Search Engine Optimization, also known as Ethical SEO, aims to make it easier for the search engines to tell when your site's content is relevant to a query. In most cases we do this by making a site genuinely more useful to its human visitors, so that they will recommend it to others by linking it from their own websites. The most important White Hat technique is simply to have a website worth recommending. That is not easy by any means, and certainly can require a great deal of work, but it is the honest way, and the only way likely to yield lasting results.

But for every White Hat technique there is a Black Hat technique for simulating it. While I work hard to write articles that help one understand various topics that often turn out to rank well for the relevant keywords, the Black Hats write software to generate thousands of grammatically correct yet meaningless articles filled with keywords carefully chosen to draw search engine traffic and yield maximum ad revenue. While I depend on others to recommend my writing by linking my articles, the Black Hats operate link farms, thousands of pages all linking to the single site they wish to promote.

Black Hats of all sorts are known as "hackers", but that is a name they appropriated from those who originally wore the badge with honesty and pride, those who work hard and cleverly to develop computer software and hardware. I have been proud to call myself a hacker - the White Hat kind - for many years, so I prefer to call the dishonest ones Black Hat hackers. The Black Hat SEOs have the specialty of hacking the search engines to make money dishonestly. White Hat SEOs by contrast work to make it easier for the search engines to do a better job.

The search engine otpimization strategy of theming a web site is more common sense and usability than trickery. The basic premise behind the strategy of theming a website is that each section of the website must be relevant to the other section, and only the sections that are relevant to each other are linked together.

If you refer to navigation, you don't really need the Solpartmenu in any page, you can play with the LINKS skin object for speedier page loads, albeit not as cool as webusers expect since it is not a menu and has some restrictions, but when you want the first page to load quickly, this is helpful.

To date, ExactSeek is the only search engine which uses visitor stats as criteria for its rankings. But Google isn't far behind. We all know that Google specializes in taking a good idea and implementing and adapting it brilliantly. This is exactly what we'll see in this case. By combining link popularity and user popularity statistics, Google will be the only major search engine to consider both what other sites think of your website and what your visitors think of your website. And because they have the most advanced algorithms for assessing link popularity, and will soon have access to the farthest reaching, most accurate web stats to assess user popularity, its competitors will be a long time catching up.

URL REWRITING
DotNetNuke support search engine friendly URLs but not human friendly URLs (offers a provider interface for doing this). However, there are some modules that allow you to do human friendly ones. But there is no perfect module yet that creates both human & friendly URLs automatically. Inventua is the closest to this and they may add the feature in a few weeks. Other option is manually rewrite each link instance with a rewrite module.

1: Use cache for as many modules as possible. Don't put in modules just because you can. Put in modules that actually gives you something back. IE, avoid Rss feed if you don't need it. Why? Because it will take longer to load your page. Same goes for other modules as well.
